DECARBONIZING CALIFORNIA BY 2025, CAN WE DO IT?

  • West Marin School 11550 State Route Point Reyes Station, CA 94956 United States (map)

The theme of the second event in the community climate conversations series was Decarbonizing California by 2025, Can We Do It? The event featured keynote speakers, Ellie Cohen, Climate Center Executive Director, and Alex Porteshawver, Marin's Senior Sustainability Coordinator of Drawdown Marin. Following the keynote, community members participated in small-group discussions, where they explored real actions (personal and political) that will help solve our climate crisis. The community provided more than 300 ideas and actionable items that can help curb the impacts of the climate crisis. Following the event, the community feedback was organized and compiled into actionable categories that inform continued events, conversations and collaborations. (See Climate Action on our website).

Transportation, Renewable Energy, Civic Engagement and Consumption were the most commonly contributed action categories from the participants of this event.

For 20 years, Ellie led Point Blue Conservation Science in using science to chart climate solutions, and she now directs The Climate Center in a new statewide effort. Ellie artfully updated us on a plan to decarbonize California, including ways we can become directly involved.

Alex Porteshawver, Marin's Senior Sustainability Coordinator of Drawdown Marin, also made a guest appearance. EAC actively participates in Drawdown Marin’s stakeholder collaboratives on carbon sequestration and climate resilient communities. Drawdown Marin is a community-driven campaign to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and prepare for climate change impacts.

Live music was provided by Buddy Faure and Joyce Kouffman, and information booths from allied organizations included the Environmental Action Committee of West Marin (EAC), Point Reyes National Seashore Association (PRNSA), SPAWN/Turtle Island, One Tam, and the Climate Center.
